Moroni - Vicious battles between separatist militias on the tiny Comoros island of Anjouan have left dozens of people dead and forced thousands from their homes, fleeing residents said yesterday.

The two factions have traded heavy rocket and artillery fire in a week-long fight for control of Anjouan, a picturesque Indian Ocean island of 200,000 people, which broke away from the main island of Grand Comore last year.
