Tourism authorities in Donegal have embarked on a major drive to promote the county as a holiday destination this summer, in an effort to counter an expected downturn in business due to foot-and-mouth restrictions in Northern Ireland.

Thirty thousand colour brochures will be distributed, combined with a media advertising campaign promoting local attractions and "fourth night free" promotions by hotels and guesthouses.

Approximately 4,000 jobs depend on the domestic market, which is worth an estimated £35£40 million annually, according to Donegal Tourism.

Mr Conor Daly, manager of Donegal Tourism, said that over 75 per cent of its tourism industry was dependent on the domestic market and that Northern Ireland accounted for over 50 per cent of tourism revenue.
