Gardaí are awaiting results of DNA tests which could establish the identity of a body which was washed ashore in Dunfanaghy, Co Donegal, almost 30 years ago.

Last year Letterkenny man Jim McGlynn (50) requested a full coroner’s inquest to establish if the body was that of his brother, Noel.

The coroner’s court in Letterkenny heard yesterday that DNA tissue samples taken from the body would be sent to Wales in order to establish if they belonged to Noel McGlynn, who went missing on June 17th, 1983, at the age of 26.

The remains of a male were found by members of a diving club on June 26th, nine days after Mr McGlynn disappeared. The body was never identified and is buried at Holy Cross Church Cemetery in Dunfanaghy.

Coroner John Cannon said the samples would be sent to Wales for “more sophisticated” analysis.
