Judge Flann Brennan granted an application brought by a Garda superintendent in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, District Court yesterday under the new Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act for the extension of a period in custody of a man being questioned about serious crime.

Mr Gerry Jones, a lawyer for the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, opposed the further 24-hour extension of the detention period, but a garda told the judge it was necessary to enable the completion of a major ongoing investigation.
