A Garda detective who crashed an unmarked Garda car on the M50 in Dublin after he spent hours in a pub has been fined €500 and given a two-year road ban.

Det Garda Kevin Keys of Mountjoy station in Dublin lost control of the car that collided with a 4x4 driven by Gareth Wooster on February 6th, 2010. Mr Wooster did not sustain serious injuries.

At Dublin District Court yesterday Det Garda Keys was found guilty of dangerous driving and Judge Conal Gibbons said “he must be held to account”.

He said Det Garda Keys did not have to ask for permission to use the unmarked car and there was no evidence to contradict his claim that he was serving a witness summons at the time.

Judge Gibbons said it was clear that drink had been taken but there was conflicting evidence as to the amount he had consumed.
