Two Italian-made helicopters worth €26 million have been ordered as part of a major overhaul of the Defence Forces, it was confirmed today.

After signing the contract for the two additional Agusta/Westland AW139 aircraft for the Air Corps, defence minister Willie O'Dea said this brought to eight the number of new helicopters that have been acquired.

"The provision of these additional two AW139s will provide the Air Corps with a very significant fleet of helicopters, which will enable them to work in close co-operation with the Army in all facets of their operations. The purchase of the additional helicopters is another positive indication of the Government's commitment to ensure that all branches of the Defence Forces are fully equipped to carry out their day-to-day roles," Mr O'Dea said.

The twin-engine Agusta/Westland AW139 aircraft can fit up to 15 troops and also fly at night.
