HAVANA - Olympic athletes and artists, school children and sugar cane cutters turned out with the National Assembly president, Mr Ricardo Alarcon, yesterday to protest against tighter new US Republican sponsored sanctions signed by President Clinton.

Demonstrators gathered for an hour long slogan chanting rally in front of a satirical mural in the bustling Vedado district which in one panel joked that Washington would sanction the sun for shining on Havana if it could. The law calls on Mr Clinton to seek UN action to make the 34 year old US embargo on Cuba international.
