Activity in the Republic's industrial sector slowed in the final quarter of last year, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) today.

Industrial production for manufacturing industries fell by 1.7 per cent in the three-month period from October to December.

The CSO said the rate of production in December was 7.6 per cent lower than the same period in 2001; turnover was down 13.7 per cent.

During the quarter, production increases of 10.4 per cent were recorded for capital goods, 5.9 per cent for intermediate products and 8.1 per cent for consumer goods.

Turnover increases of 0.5 per cent were recorded for intermediate products and 5.4 per cent for consumer goods. A decrease of 5.7 per cent was recorded for capital goods.
