Loaded sawn-off shotgun found in Offaly cemetery

Gardai believe possible attack at graveside service has been foiled

A loaded sawn-off shotgun and a quantity of ammunition have been recovered in a graveyard, gardai said.

Gardai believe a possible attack at a graveside service was foiled following the discovery of the weapon at Clonminch cemetery in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

It is suspected the gun was hidden by members of the Travelling community involved in a feud ahead of the annual blessing of the graves ceremony this Sunday.

A Garda spokesman said an examination of the scene is ongoing and no arrests have been made to date.
