Brussels - The European Commission said yesterday it was considering a request from the Belgian judicial authorities to lift the diplomatic immunity on the former French Commissioner, Ms Edith Cresson, Patrick Smyth reports. It is not clear whether the request is to allow questioning or charges.

A spokesman for the Commission would only confirm that the dossier concerns the "Berthelot" affair, the story of Ms Cresson's recruitment of her dentist as a scientific consultant.
