Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has agreed to defer the signing of contracts with a private waste collecting firm in a bid to help resolve a dispute over refuse services in south Dublin.

This evening’s decision came after days of talks at the Labour Relations Commission between unions and management in the county council.

The council is seeking to outsource part of its waste collection service to Panda Waste from Monday next, but Siptu which represents the workers is opposed the move and threatened to take industrial action from the start of business on Thursday.

As a result of today’s decision by the council the strike by Siptu members has also been deferred.

Both sides will enter further discussions to resolve the dispute.
