A 32-year-old salesman has been found guilty of raping and assaulting a woman whom he battered on the same occasion in a Cork suburb.

Paul Buckley, of Baker's Road, Gurranabraher had pleaded not guilty to raping and assaulting the woman causing her harm on the night of April 7th, 2002.

The jury of nine men and two women at the Central Criminal Court took almost six hours to reach unanimous guilty verdicts on both counts and spent one night in a hotel. It was day seven of the trial.

Mr Justice Paul Butler remanded Buckley in custody for mention of the case on October 8th when it is hoped a date for sentence will be set.
