Cork City recaptured the league form that deserted them at the weekend to knock Monaghan United out of the FAI Carlsberg Cup at the second attempt tonight.

Cork performed well below par during Saturday’s drawn tie at Century Homes Park but in front of a decent 5,000 plus crowd at Turners Cross this evening, any notion of an upset was swiftly dispelled by the home side.

City hit the front after 10 minutes when Billy Woods floated in a free-kick for Greg O’Halloran to nod home at the back post.

Both sides exchanged chances to no avail before the break and it wasn’t until 67 minutes that Cork doubled their advantage through John O'Flynn.

Monaghan’s Paul Shiels was sent off with 15 minutes to play and Woods rubbed salt in the wounds with a fine individual effort on 85 minutes to cap a fine display.
