An unemployed man charged in connection with the death of a woman in Dundalk was remanded in custody with consent to bail at Drogheda District Court yesterday.
Mr David Hughes (43), Oakland Park, Dundalk, is charged with assaulting Ms Janet Chaney, causing her harm at the same address on April 14th.
The 47-year-old mother of three, from Wiltshire, was pronounced dead at the Louth County Hospital shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, an hour after being taken there by ambulance from her home.
Sgt Bill Piper told the court the accused made no reply when charged under Section 3 of the Non-fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.
Mr Dermot Lavery, solicitor, said his client was not in a position to apply for bail but asked Judge Flann Brennan to fix bail as he argued there was no reason why it should not be granted.
Judge Brennan remanded the accused in custody with consent to €500 bail and an independent surety of 5,000.
He also granted him free legal aid.
