A pair of conjoined twins who were born in Dublin earlier this week have died in hospital overnight.

The twins were born to an Irish woman at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin, on Monday.

They were brought to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, where doctors decided it would be impossible to separate them.

It was understood they were joined at the abdomen and shared a liver.

The parents, who are from the midlands, were told that the twins were conjoined following ultrasound scanning. The mother remains at the National Maternity Hospital.
