Kigali - Congolese rebels said yesterday they would still sign a peace deal to end more than a year of fighting in the vast central African nation, despite reports of fresh attacks by government forces on the southern front.

"[President] Kabila is attacking our forces because he wants to stop the peace process," Mr Moise Nyarugabo, vice-president of the main rebel Congolese Rally for Democracy, said.

"But the attacks change nothing, we shall sign even so," Mr Nyarugabo said from rebel headquarters in the eastern Congolese town of Goma.
