Flooding in Clonmel, Co Tipperary has started to abate this evening but most of the town centre remains impassable as receding waters during the day returned many other areas affected by the storms of the past two days to normal.

Sir Thomas's Bridge in Clonmel is open to local traffic but the Garda say all othere bridges and the quay and Davis's Road are still flooded.

The situation has angered the townspeople because a four-year-old plan to secure the banks of the River Suir in the town has still not been implemented.

The Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Mr Tom Parlon, has been strongly criticised after he promised last year to put the measures in place.

Last night, the minister promised work on the €35 million flood relief scheme will start early next year. He also promised to seek humanitarian aid funds to assist people whose homes and premises have sustained flood damage.

The situation in other areas severely affected by the storms is improving. In Cork city, which was badly hit, flooding has abated and all roads are now open. In Waterford city roads closed due to floods have also reopened but the Tramore Rd remains closed.

In Co Wexford, AA Roadwatch advises motorists to take exercise caution around Enniscorthy although conditions have improved.
