Clean-up under way following floods

A clean-up operation is under way today after heavy rains caused flooding in several counties last night.

Heavy rainfall swept the country for a number of hours yesterday, with the south and east of the country worst affected.

Met Éireann said while the volume of rainfall was not unusual for the time of the year, it fell over a short period of time, causing flash floods in some areas.

Cork was particularly badly affected, with areas around Carrigaline, Kinsale and Cashel experiencing flooding. Many approach roads to Kinsale were damaged, the council said.

In Passage West, several cars were damaged after being swept down a hill and hitting parked cars further down the road. No one was injured in the incident.

“The engineer in Kinsale said in 25 years it was the worst of his experience. It was just incessant rain from 4pm yesterday right through the night,” said Cork County Council spokesman Tom O’Sullivan.

Emergency crews were dispatched to deal with the flooding. “We had crews working throughout the night, trying to keep roads open, maintain public safety and advise householders of what to do,” he said.

There was also some flash flooding in Co Waterford, but it was confined to areas already prone to such incidents.

“The area engineers in all four areas, Dungarvan, Comeragh, Tramore and Lismore have reported widespread flooding, however, there have been no particular incidents of major concern reported,” a spokeswoman for the council said.

Leaves clogging road gullies and bridges have caused difficulties, the council said, but no roads are reported to be impassable.

“At this point it’s too early to determine a cost as inspections to determine the full extent of any damage will have to be undertaken.”

In Clonmel, Co Tipperary, the town had escaped the worst of the flooding, but town officials said the situation was being monitored. In February, heavy downpours caused the River Suir to burst its banks.

This evening, there were reports of flooding in parts of Galway, Kilkenny and Waterford, with surface water and wet conditions in many areas.

Met Éireann forecaster Michael McAuliffe said more wet weather was on the way. "We've had another spell of short but intense rain today which again has called a few temporary flooding problems," he said.  "Although tomorrow wil be a better day for most areas, there is more wet weather hovering around that is likely to affect at least some parts of the country later tomorrow and into Saturday."
