Algiers - Clashes between security forces and Islamist extremists left 14 dead and eight wounded in weekend violence in Algeria, newspapers reported yesterday.
Three gendarmes and a civilian guard were killed on Friday in an ambush by an armed group near Skikda, 510 km east of Algiers.
Six soldiers were seriously wounded on Friday in a bomb explosion in Sidi Chaib, some 440 km south-west of the capital, reports said.
Elsewhere, security forces conducting a sweep near TiziOuzou, capital of the northeastern Kabylie region, killed six armed Islamic extremists overnight on Thursday.
