Changes in how savings are assessed when paying unemployment assistance have been announced by the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs, Mr Ahern.

From October the first £10,000 of savings will be disregarded when assessing someone's entitlement to unemployment assistance. Currently there are no disregards for those on unemployment assistance, and all income is assessed.
