Former ICTU general secretary Mr Peter Cassells and recent Labour Dáil candidate Mr Peter Ward are seeking to stand for Labour in the East constituency, formerly Leinster, in next June's European Parliament elections.
With nominations to close tomorrow, the pair are expected to contest the nomination. The party will use a "one member, one vote" system to choose its candidate. A party spokesman said yesterday they had not yet decided whether to hold a postal ballot of members or to hold several conventions in different parts of Leinster.
Mr Cassells is executive chairman of the National Centre for Partnership and Performance, and Forfás chairman. He is a member of the Government-appointed task force to review the tourism industry.
Mr Ward is a barrister and unsuccessfully contested the Meath constituency for Labour in 1992. He is active in the Labour Lawyers group and was part of the successful 1995 pro-divorce campaign.
