A car bomb exploded in the southeast Afghan city of Kandahar today, killing a local soldier and wounding at least three people, Qatar's Al Jazeera satellite television reported.

The incident occurred on the first anniversary of the swearing-in of the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who took over after a US-led military coalition toppled the fundamentalist Taliban regime.

Kandahar was the Taliban's former stronghold.

Al Jazeera, which has a strong presence in Afghanistan, did not give any more details.
