A two mile branch of the Old Grand Canal near Ballinasloe, Co Galway, is to be redeveloped as a coarse fishery. The town's urban council and the chamber of commerce are joining forces to reopen the disused canal, which is partly overgrown with weeds and was closed in 1961.

Bord na Mona and the Central Fisheries Board are to help with excavation and restocking.
