Unlicensed road hauliers face a nationwide crackdown as a multi-agency operation begins tonight with special checkpoints being set up on the State's road networks.

Assistant Commissioner Eddie Rock, head of the Traffic Corps, said the operation is being launched following consultations with the road haulage sector.

He said the multi-agency operation would check for road haulage licences, vehicle and driver licences and also for illegal dumping.

"We will be looking at unlicensed hauliers principally, the use of inappropriate fuel and the illegal dumping of waste".

"The operation is a recognition of the environment that's out there and the necessity to make sure these people aren't operating illegally because it makes the playing field unlevel for people operating within normal practices," he said.

Gardai, local authorities, the Road Safety Authority and customs officials will be involved with the checkpoints.

He said gardai would initially act on a number of intelligence reports about unlicensed hauliers and said the operation would continue for as long as necessary.

"It's an important issue and a road safety issue. Many of the illegal operators use dangerous vehicles. There are issues with trailers not being attached properly and generally taking shortcuts."

Mr Rock said every effort would be made during the operation to ensure that bona fide operators were not inconvenienced.
