Daily "early bird" flights from Knock to Dublin are not receiving the backing of the business sector in the west of Ireland, the chairman of Knock Airport board, Mr Cathal Duffy, claimed last night.

Mr Duffy said the Aer Arann Express route between Knock and Dublin was now performing in a "reliable and assured manner". The new aircraft was remaining overnight at Knock, which ensured reliability and comfort in travel to and from Dublin.

But Mr Duffy added: "The expected and assured support from the business sector in our catchment area is not yet at a satisfactory level. Aer Arann Express and Knock International Airport are currently renewing their joint efforts to promote this valuable service to the entire community.

"While the Government is currently committed to support this PSO service for a limited period, it is subject to review if not supported by the community or justifiable within the criteria for this service."
