Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has been appointed as the Labour Party’s director of elections for next month’s fiscal treaty referendum campaign.

Making the announcement Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said the passing of the treaty was crucial to the country's economic recovery.

He said Ms Burton’s appointment was an indication of how seriously the Labour Party was taking the campaign.

The referendum will take place on Thursday, May 31st, and voters will be asked whether or not they wish to ratify the treaty and adopt the legislation required to bring it into effect.

Ms Burton said she would ensure her party worked hard to make sure it was passed.

She said the treaty was about making sure the economy could grow in a sustainable way into the future.

Last month Taoiseach Enda Kenny appointed Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney as Fine Gael’s national director for the referendum.
