A member of the British armed forces was killed in Afghanistan today during operations against "insurgent positions", the British Ministry of Defence said.
It happened in the lawless Helmand province in the south of the country this afternoon, the MoD said in a statement.
The statement said: "It is with regret that we can confirm that a member of the UK Armed Forces has been killed in action this afternoon during ongoing operations against insurgent positions in Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan."
No further details were yet available and next of kin were being informed, the statement said.
