Two young boys in the North are receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries they received in a car crash that claimed the lives of their parents. A 22-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital along with the boys, aged five and six, after the car she was driving collided headon with the family's vehicle on the main Keady to Newtownhamilton Road in Co Armagh at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. The family, from the Keady area, was driving towards Newtownhamilton.

The boys' mother, Mrs Catherine Hughes (33), died instantly. Their father, Mr Damien Patrick Hughes (34), who was driving, died at the scene a short time later despite the efforts of paramedics. The woman driver and one of the boys were yesterday described as "critically ill" and the second boy is said to be "stable". A 74-year-old Co Cavan man was killed instantly when he was crushed by a steel barrier at a silage pit on his farm in Canningstown, Cootehill. A postmortem is to be carried out today.

A motorcycle rider from Dublin in his 40s was killed in a road accident on the Blessington to Baltinglass Road yesterday when he collided with a car. The occupants of the car were treated for their injuries in Naas General Hospital.
