The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee this afternoon left Britain's interest rates on hold at 5.25 per cent, a decision widely expected by financial markets.

Economists had said a flow of data showing the domestic economy remained robust in spite of a weakening global economy meant the central bank was highly unlikely to add to the three quarter-point cuts it has already made this year.
