An explosion ripped through two carriages of a passenger train in eastern India today, killing four people and injuring at least 50 others.
The cause of the blast was not immediately known. It was not clear if any explosive device had been planted in the train or on the track.
Officials did not name any suspect, and no one immediately claimed responsibility.
The explosion occurred near Belacoba train station, about 345 miles north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state, said the state's Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy.
Roy said that four passengers died at the scene, but that the toll could climb because some of the injured passengers were in serious condition.
At least 50 passengers were injured, he said. Police had earlier reported five deaths, based on initial information.
