A school in north Belfast has reopened after being shut for several hours this morning due to a bomb alert.

A suspicious object was discovered in the grounds of Mercy Primary School on the Crumlin Road.

Police and bomb disposal experts were called in, and pupils were asked not to attend.

British army technical experts carried out a controlled explosion. The device was later declared a hoax.

Sinn Féin's North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly said the incident was unacceptable.

"Unfortunately within north Belfast there are people who think this kind of action is justifiable. We see this in previous attacks over the past months," he said.

"Those responsible are essentially attacking our children's education, their future, and their sense of safety. They need to realise this and stop any such attacks immediately."
