Barclays bank is to cut 1,000 posts from its high street branches across Britain.

Most of the losses would not result in staff being made redundant but would see them being redeployed as their roles disappeared, a company spokeswoman said.

She said the jobs announcement was originally made during the acquisition of the Woolwich in 2000 when it was said that 2,000 posts in the two companies were being duplicated.

All the posts would be lost in Barclays' personal finance services and would involve "non-customer facing" roles. The spokeswoman did not have details about how many staff would be made redundant.

A spokesman for financial union Unifi said: "We're disappointed to see any jobs being lost but we recognise, following consultation with Barclays, it has offered anybody that wants to stay the opportunity to do so.

"The jobs that are being lost are realistic jobs, not just paper jobs to please the City".
