Supt Joe Sullivan said: "I do not believe that the defendant would turn up for trial."

Mr Barry Healy, defending, suggested his client would give up his passport and sign on at a Garda station.

Supt Sullivan said: "It would not be acceptable. The book of evidence should be prepared within a month or so. There is a sense of urgency in the matter and the DPP is aware of it."

Refusing the bail application, the judge remanded the defendant to Castlerea to appear at Monaghan Court next Tuesday.
