A garda who suffered back injuries after he was attacked by a man wielding an axe in the car park of Birr Garda station was awarded £47,000 at the High Court yesterday.

In an affidavit, Garda Harold Browne (45), a lecturer at the Garda Training College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, said he was knocked to the ground on February 15th, 1995, while attempting to disarm a man who was vandalising a patrol car.

He was out of work for 75 days as a result of his injury and had to receive pain-relieving injections, the garda said.
