Meals-on-wheels and home-help services carry a stigma among older people, a research project at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has found. Twenty-nine per cent of people surveyed would be embarrassed at having to accept a meals-on-wheels service while 19 per cent would find the home-help service embarrassing.
