At least 40 people were killed and 60 others were missing when a gold mine collapsed today in Colombia, authorities said.

At least 40 people were killed and 60 others were missing when a gold mine collapsed today in Colombia, authorities said.

The abandoned mine, located some 300 kilometres west of the capital, Bogota, collapsed after some 100 gold-seekers sneaked in to look for the precious metal, civil defense spokesman Mr Eduardo Arevalo said.

Hundreds of firemen and emergency workers rushed to the scene armed with excavators to try and dig out any survivors.

According to local police, 23 gold seekers were injured in the accident.
