The head of the main secondary teacher union is to retire later this year

The head of the main secondary teacher union is to retire later this year. John White, general secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland (ASTI), is to retire on age grounds in September after more than six years at the helm.

Mr White recently received a honorary degree from the National University of Ireland.

He has also been widely praised for his measured leadership style.
