The Arts Council has welcomed the announcement that a new site for the Abbey Theatre has been identified, writes Fiona Gartland.

Minister for Arts John O'Donoghue said this week he would seek formal Government approval for the redevelopment of the Abbey Theatre at Dublin's George's Dock, beside the Financial Services Centre.

A spokeswoman for the Arts Council said certainty about the theatre's new home would give it stability. "We will shortly be in a position to give detailed advice to the Minister on changes to governance arrangements at the Abbey," she said.

A review by KPMG to establish how the Abbey's losses could have been understated was under way and would be complete when the Abbey board meets on June 29th, she added.
