Athens - Greece's outspoken religious leader criticised Jews yesterday, blaming them for his church's ongoing fracas with the government over the removal of religious affiliation from state identity cards. "You know who is behind the identity cards issue? The Jews, and for the first time we have proof of that," Greek Orthodox Archbishop Christodoulos was quoted as saying in the daily newspaper To Vima.
The newspaper said he had said in an interview that Jews had asked the Prime Minister, Mr Costas Simitis, during his visit to Washington in 1996, to remove the religious affiliation from state Greek IDs.
