The Air Corps has unveiled two newly delivered €6.4 million helicopters.

Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea inspected the aircraft at Baldonnel's Casement Aerodrome this afternoon.

The EC-135 helicopters were supplied by the French/German company, Eurocopter. One of the two current Garda helicopters is the same model.

Mr O'Dea said that the main functions of the aircraft would be pilot training, winching operations and inland search-and-rescue training.

"Significantly these new helicopters can be used in an air ambulance role and an air ambulance kit is part of the additional equipment ordered with the helicopters," he added.

The Government has also placed an order for the delivery of four larger AB139 helicopters from the Italian/UK firm Bell Augusta at a cost of €48.4 million. Two will be delivered in 2006 with the other two expected in 2007.

The AB139 will be responsible for heavier duties, including limited troop transport. It will also be used for air ambulance, inland search and rescue, VIP transports and Garda co-operation duties.

The Air Corps has 13 helicopters, including Alouette models that are 40 years old. Some of these aircraft are now expected to be sold.
