London - A British businessman who triggered a media storm in the US after giving a cocktail waitress a $10,000 tip that later bounced was drunk and can't pay her, according to today's Daily Mirror.

Londoner David Nicholas is quoted as saying he had "had too many drinks and was jetlagged" when he gave 23-year-old waitress Melanie Uczen the surprise gratuity she planned to use to fulfil her dream to go to graduate school.

The owners of the Leg Room club in Chicago have engaged a lawyer to see if he will honour the tip, but have promised to pay Ms Uczen themselves if he does not.
