A weekend of sports, music, showers and allegedly the odd sunny spell is in store for those brave enough to venture outdoors to any of this weekend's choice events.

Music fans preparing to brave the elements at the Oxegen festival have already been strongly advised to come prepared.

We understand that goodies of all hues will be on sale at the festival this year with every taste catered for. However, it might be an idea for some budding entrepreneur to set up a stall selling wet suits and oxygen tanks as it will, we presume, lash down on them at some stage over the weekend.

Met Éireann promises bright or sunny spells on occasion, with some areas managing to stay dry tonight, and scattered showers will occur, with apparently only "a few" of them heavy. How they can be so accurate? God only knows.

The 80,000 revellers expected at the festival this year have been advised by gardaí and organisers to use public transport.

The AA said traffic was building on all routes from early afternoon with one-hour delays through Naas town.

Information on travel arrangements is available from the Oxegen website, but those not planning to attend the festival and who enjoy driving the open road would best be served to avoid the Punchestown area until Monday.

Munster hurling fans are a hardy bunch, and those whose nerves survived Limerick's nigh epic battle with Tipperary in the earlier stages of the competition will

head for the provincial final in Thurles between Limerick and Waterford on Sunday.

Too close to call, the mood about is that these are two sides that are evenly matched, but one thing that can be predicted with

complete certainty is that 55,000 fans will make it to the match rain or shine.

Heavy traffic is also expected in Co Kildare where the K-Club is hosting the Smurfit European Open which ends on Sunday.

Roadworks are causing various delays on the M7 between Maudlins & Newhall in Kildare tonight, and the N63 between Newbridge and Ballygar in Galway has traffic controls that will have a 50kph speed limit until approximately 8th August.

Elsewhere, roadworks are in place on the N22 Farranfore Road, from Scart Cross to Brennan's Glen near Killarney.
