Funding of €7.9 million is to be provided for nine tourism development projects for equestrian, sports, walking and cycling facilities in the regions.

Minister for Tourism John O'Donoghue announced the grants yesterday as part of Fáilte Ireland's Tourism Product Scheme.

"I am confident that all the projects being supported will further enhance the development of tourism in their regions," he said.

The Minister added he was satisfied that the scheme was now well advanced, with full grant approvals, amounting to just under €40 million, approved to date in respect of 50 projects nationwide.

There would be further announcements, he said.

Grants have been allocated for the development of equestrian centres at Castle Leslie Equestrian Centre, Glaslough, Co Monaghan; Cavan Equestrian Centre, Latt, Co Cavan; and Mount Juliet Equestrian Centre, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny.

In Co Mayo, funds have been granted towards the development of an international sports tourism facility at Breaffy Sports and Excellence Centre, Castlebar; and expansion of water sports facilities at Achill Island Leisure Ltd, Achill.

The Killary Adventure Co, Leenane, Co Galway, will receive a grant towards the provision of additional facilities.

Lough Derg International Waterpark, will also receive a grant towards the provision of tourism facilities.

Two grants have been allocated to Coillte Forest Recreation for the development of walking and cycling trails.
