The budget for the Enterprise Ireland Basic Research Grant Scheme has been increased to £6.33 million but fewer projects will be assisted than last year.
The Irish Research Scientists' Association welcomed the increase but it was very disappointed the success rate for applicants had fallen.
The association said Government support for research and development is about 10 per cent of what Denmark gave on basic scientific research.
