The widow of a 71-year-old man who was among three people killed in a road incident has secured €280,000 damages for mental distress in settlement of her High Court action.

Arlene Ann Bealin (65), Whitestone, New York, brought the proceedings over the death of her husband Andrew, an Irish citizen, while travelling as a passenger in a car which was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry near Munney Cross, Stradbally, Co Laois, on November 19th, 2005.

The action was against a nominated representative of the late Patrick Kelly, the driver of the car. Mr Kelly and his wife Nicola, of Drum Road, Summerhill, Athlone, Co Westmeath were also killed. Mr Bealin, a father of two, and Mr Kelly were cousins.

The court heard the three were travelling to a funeral when the incident occurred.
