Jakarta - Seven people were killed in fighting between Christians and Muslims yesterday in Indonesia's bloodied spice islands, bringing the death toll over four days of violence to at least 28.

Residents said the seven were killed in bitter fighting which raged through the afternoon despite the deployment of heavily armed police and soldiers after 14 people were killed on Saturday.

Gunshots and explosions echoed across the once-picturesque harbourside city of Ambon, the main city of the Moluccas, and thick piles of smoke choked the air as mobs rampaged and torched buildings yesterday.
