Rutland Island: €300,000A cottage beside the sea on Rutland Island comes with a private mooring, says Fiona Tyrrell
A refurbished 19th century cottage on Rutland Island, Co Donegal with Atlantic waves yards from the door has just about everything island-dreamers could want from a Irish holiday home.
Gunne is handling the sale Duck Cottage, a cosy four-bedroom cottage with a price tag of €300,000. The cottage is one of 10 houses on this small island off the west coast of Donegal.
The current owners are selling the property to buy a boat for an around-the-world trip. They have sympathetically restored the 19th century house, which is in immaculate condition and has a strong naval theme running throughout.
A two-storey extension was added to the single-storey cottage five years ago giving two extra bedrooms to the house and a light-filled livingroom offering splendid costal views.
There is a spacious traditional kitchen/diningroom with hardwood floor and a range of fitted natural pine units and Belfast sink. An open fireplace and charming blue dresser complete the rustic look.
This leads into a livingroom with the original cast-iron fireplace and exposed rafters. A second livingroom comprises the entire upper floor of the extension. Large floor-to-ceiling windows either side of a patio door provide magnificent views and access to a large steel balcony. Four bedrooms, a family bathroom, a shower room and a utility room complete the accommodation.
The house has a private mooring a stone's throw from the house. Given that there is no ferry service to the island, a small boat is a must. The journey from the fishing village of Burtonport takes five minutes. Carrickfinn Airport, which has daily flights to Dublin, is 10 kms from Burtonport.
The island itself boasts an abundance of wildlife and a secluded sandy beach.
