End-of-terrace house in Clontarf has a host of Georgian features

 

Prof Michael Bannon, a retired UCD lecturer, and his wife, Pauline, a lecturer in Design at the Grafton Academy, bought this end-of-terrace house in 1986. The house had been used as flats and the Bannons undertook the mammoth task of restoring the house to its former glory.

It was built in the 1840s and although Victorian by definition of its era, the house has a host of Georgian features. The late architectural historian Maurice Craig explained that as Ireland was behind London in terms of building trends, Georgian styles ran right up to the 1870s in Dublin.

Set at the end of a private terrace of six houses known as Warrenpoint, after landlord agent Isaac Warren, it was part of the Vernon estate and is tucked behind a communal croquet lawn which acts as a boundary with the main road.

The lawn is owned by all of the residents of this enclave. What will attract buyers to this house are not just the period features, of which a stained glass rose window on the staircase is exceptional, but it’s privacy from the busy traffic on Clontarf road.

The house has two principal reception rooms on the ground floor with original fireplaces and soaring ceilings. The dual aspect windows allow views over Dublin Bay to the front and the garden to the rear.

Downstairs, the kitchen is at upper-garden level and the units, which have graced the room for some years, have had a recent lick of paint. At lower-garden level are two further reception rooms and a large family bathroom.

The three main bedrooms on the top floor are spacious and those to the front have lovely sea views.

The deeds of the house, which date from 1844, state that no tenants will be allowed to engage in on-site activities such as using the house as a tannery, brewery, ale house, chandlery or as a blacksmiths. There is no doubt that new owners will enjoy number 90 as a spacious family home.

The Bannons, now with an empty nest, have retired to a private mews to the rear. They have placed their 270sq m (2,906sq ft) home in turnkey condition on the market through estate agent Lisney with an asking price of €1.3 million.
