Grand style in graceful grounds in Tipperary

Ted and Kay Moynihan have painstakingly restored a rambling late-Victorian house set in manicured gardens, with a coach house, grain stores, courtyard and orchard

Ballintoher House is situated two kilometres from Nenagh in Co Tipperary. The house was constructed in two stages: the oldest part dates from 1890, and a newer wing, which blends seamlessly with the original structure dates from 1910.

The 484sq m property, lying on 3.4 acres, was purchased by Ted and Kay Moynihan in 1987.

"It was in an awful state, and took us three years to restore. Four men worked for six months to strip 100 years of paint from the sash windows," says Ted Moynihan, who was patron of the renowned Ted's restaurant and bar in Limerick. Now retired, the couple also established Matt the Thresher restaurants in Birdhill, Limerick and Pembroke Street, Dublin. These are now run by Moynihan's daughter Charlotte and her husband, Jimmy Lyons.

On the ground floor a graceful staircase sweeps to the upper floors from a chequered tiled hallway. Off the hall lie the principal reception rooms: a drawingroom and a diningroom with floor-to-ceiling bay windows, original marble fireplaces and afromosia floors.

With entertaining in mind, the Moynihans converted the old scullery to a bar.

In the older wing is a family room, a kitchen and an informal diningroom.

There are six bedrooms in total, all of which are en suite and overlook the manicured gardens, which feature lime, oak and chestnut trees.

The property is laid out around a courtyard, which includes a restored coach house and grain stores. The lands include an orchard and a paddock where the family goat resides.

The location of the house will appeal to those who like water sports, as Lough Derg is just a 15-minute drive.

The Moynihans have their heart set on France for retirement and have placed Ballintoher House on the market through Ganly Walters with an asking price of €995,000.
