The owners of Luttrellstown Castle have successfully appealed a decision by Fingal County Council to refuse permission for a golf academy on its demesne in Castleknock, Dublin 15.
An Bord Pleanála has overturned the decision and granted permission for the single storey 279sq m (3,003sq ft) building on the eastern boundary of Luttrellstown Demesne, a 230-hectare historic country estate.
The estate, centred on Luttrellstown Castle, was fashioned in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It includes an outer wall with gates and gate-lodges, including the Crazy Gate which is beside the subject site.
The estate is in the process of being transformed into a commercial recreational complex with a golf course and club house, hotel, residential development, holiday cottages and golf maintenance facility.
Fingal County Council refused permission for the golf academy on the basis that the development would have a detrimental impact on the Crazy Gate. It also said the academy would be positioned prominently within the Demesne and would be visually obtrusive.
But, An Bord Pleanála disagreed and granted permission on condition that the building is moved 10 metres in a southerly direction on the site and that the Crazy Gate is not used as an access to the development.
